“It’s Independence Day 2012, and I’ve got Leigh’s Favorite Books — a beautiful little bookstore in downtown Sunnyvale — on my mind. Maybe it’s because I’m about to launch a business (a consulting firm) in the same neighborhood. Maybe it’s because I first visited the store the season it first opened, in 2004. Maybe it’s because of all the categories of businesses I can think of, the independent bookstore has got to be the toughest, especially in a place like Silicon Valley. If a bookstore can make it here, so can I, or anyone else for that matter.”

“Of course, it takes a lot more than inspiration to make a retail business successful. Over the years, I’ve come to admire small retailers, and have learned just how challenging it is for them in the Bay Area…”
