Expert Feature: How To Set Up Landing Pages that Convert Tons of Clients

Landing pages are very important to any lead nurturing system you may have put in place. But they’re a challenge to get right, and there’s a real science behind them. Here’s how to set them up and know that they’ll convert browsers to potential customers.

how to build an email list

If you do any kind of online marketing, you’ve probably heard that you need a “landing page”.

What exactly is a landing page, why is it important, and how do you set them up?

These are all excellent questions.

Presumably, your business is like most, in that you need customers in order to survive and keep the lights on.

If that’s true, you have to be able to attract people to your business.

It’s unfortunate, but 99.9% (I made that number up, but it’s close) of people are NOT ready to whip out their wallet and give you money the minute they see your awesome stuff on your website.

Instead, you have to woo your customers a bit so they get to know you (I’ve written about that before here.)

So assuming your customers are like most ordinary customers, they want to get to know you a bit and warm up to you before they whip out said wallet and throw money at you.

Your List

In that case, you have to get them “on your list”.

This could be a mailing list or an e-mail list. The latter is easy to manage, and allows you to reach thousands of people with the click of a mouse.

But again, those pesky customers aren’t just going to hand you their e-mail address.

You have to earn it.

So I like to offer people different incentives in exchange for giving me their e-mail address.

This is called an “ethical bribe”. Thus enters the landing page.

When you’ve lured someone to come check out your goods on your website, hopefully you’ve got an option to sign up for your newsletter, and in exchange, they’ll receive your free report or something else of value.

The “Squeeze Page”

You can set up a landing page which only gives them that option: sign up or leave.

This is called a “squeeze page“, perhaps named after a “squeeze chute” for livestock where the cow has no choice but to enter or leave.

The problem is that there is a real science to setting up a landing page so that it performs well, gets people into your e-mail list, thanks them for signing up, and a host of other things that can make it very time consuming to try to figure it all out.

One of my absolute favorite tools in the world is LeadPages™, and they have a brilliant system for creating landing pages and squeeze pages on the fly that just work.

They have hundreds of tried-and-true templates that you can customize as much as you want.

Change the text, images, fonts, button color, or whatever else you want, all with their intuitive interface. You can sort by which landing pages have the best conversion rate (the most people have signed up), so you know that it’s been tested with thousands and thousands of users.

Here’s an example of a squeeze page I set up using LeadPages for my upcoming webinar (and I hope you’ll register for it too!):

The hardest part about setting up landing pages is integrating them with your lead nurturing systems (read that as your e-mail list).

LeadPages has it all figured out, and with a click of a button, you can drop people into your e-mail list right there.

They integrate with all the common systems, including:

  • Aweber
  • Infusionsoft
  • Constant Contact
  • iContact
  • 1ShoppingCart
  • Hubspot
  • Salesforce

Just to name a few (there are many more).

Even better, they integrate with GotoWebinar directly, so if someone signs up for your free webinar (more ethical bribes), it automatically registers them for the webinar AND puts them into your newsletter list at the same time!

No need to go through extra steps to get people out of GTW and into your list. Boom. Done.

Finally, LeadPages will host the landing page for you (included), or they integrate directly into WordPress (your blog or website), or you can even download the HTML and post it on your own website as another page.

It includes the SEO tools as well as integrates with Google Analytics, so you can track how many times people viewed your page.

I don’t have room to go on any further about all the cool stuff in LeadPages, but once you get in there and start messing with it, I guarantee you’ll be hooked.
