Will Voters Decide To Increase The Minimum Wage In San Jose?
All of the attention on the November elections is focused on the presidential race right now.
But there are other important changes that could happen based on the voting in November.
One of those changes is to the minimum wage in San Jose. It could increase significantly depending on how people vote.
Check out this article called “Voters will decide in November whether to increase minimum wage in San Jose” by Carol Rosen and learn about the possible minimum wage increase in San Jose and what could happen if it passes…
“There are enough issues on this November’s ballot to keep Californians working on it for hours. While a number are contentious, the question of raising San Jose’s minimum wage from $8 to $10 has proponents and opponents drawing lines in the sand.”
“A group of San Jose State political science students proposed the idea and got enough petition signatures to put the measure on the ballot.”
“Labor, several nonprofit organizations and some private citizens believe the $2 increase is imperative because it’s too hard to live in this area on $8 an hour. The other side, which includes Mayor Chuck Reed, the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, as well as many owners of small businesses, argue that the hike would hurt local businesses and thus San Jose’s economy.”
“If the measure passes, it will cost the city’s general fund $612,000, which Reed says is equal to the pay of three police officers, staffing for a smaller community center or a small branch library.”
