Story: The Rabbi’s Goat Prescription – How To Really Be Thankful
Thanksgiving will soon be here, so I had to share this story that George Mikes tells in “How to be Decadent.”
It’s a short story, but don’t miss the lesson, because it could help you to be a little more thankful this Thanksgiving day.
Mikes says, “In Budapest, a man goes to the rabbi and complains, ‘Life is unbearable. There are nine of us living in one room. What can I do?‘
“The rabbi answered, ‘Take your goat into the room with you.’
“The man was incredulous, but the rabbi insists. ‘Do as I say and come back in a week.’
“A week later the man comes back looking more distraught than before. ‘We cannot stand it,’ he tells the rabbi. ‘The goat is filthy.’
“The rabbi then tells him, ‘Go home and let the goat out. And come back in a week.’
“A radiant man returns to the rabbi a week later, exclaiming, ‘Life is beautiful. We enjoy every minute of it now that there’s no goat — only the nine of us.'”
Many times we all stay eternally ungrateful because we focus on how things could be better than they are.
What if the next time we were feeling less than thankful we instead focused on how things could be worse?
I bet things would seem so much better and we’d be truly thankful.
If that doesn’t work you might need to go get a goat. 🙂
From BayBusinessHelp.com we hope you have a Thanksgiving filled with true thankfulness!
