STORY: A Surprising Lesson On Priorites From A Mentally Disturbed Man

actions and priorities

2 weeks ago, August 26th, was the first day of school for my sons.

A fun tradition that we have for the first day of school is that we celebrate the first day by getting ice cream.

On that particular day, we decided to kick things up a notch and go to C.R.E.A.M. (Cookies Rule Everything Around Me) in Palo Alto.

They serve different types of homemade cookies that you choose for your freshly made ice cream sandwich.

It was REALLY good!

Little did I know that simple decision would end up teaching me an unexpected lesson.

You see, after CREAM we decided to walk around downtown Palo Alto with my family. We saw a GameStop and decided to go to in let the boys look at some games (just look!!).

The Unexpected Life Lesson

That’s when something strange happened that I wanted to share with you today.

We were about to walk into GameStop and as we were about to go in, I saw a mentally ill man off to my left.

How did I know he was mentally ill? He was doing something very strange.

He was facing the wall with his face right up against the wall (his nose was literally up against the wall).

But that wasn’t the strange part.

The strange part was that he was yelling at the wall saying, “I’m not crazy, you #%$# psychopath!”

Yes, that’s right, the man was trying to prove that he WASN’T crazy to a wall!

What Priorities Do Your Actions Reveal?

When I saw it, I suddenly thought about how ironic this scene was and I had this thought…

How many times are we doing something which only proves the thing we’re actually denying at the top of our lungs?

If we’re honest, it’s true for all of us, not just this poor man with mental problems.

We SAY different things are important to us, but if someone looked at our life would they SEE that that is true?

It’s been said, “If you want to know what’s really important to a person, then just look at their calendar and their checkbook.”

You can tell what is really important to a person by what they spend their time on and what they spend their money on.

4 Important Questions

  • What does your wallet and day-planner reveal about your priorities?
  • Are they the priorities you claim to have?
  • Are they the priorities you want to have?
  • Is there anything you need to do about this?
