- One day in the 1990s, Beto Perez forgot his tape of aerobics music for a class he was teaching. Little did he know that mistake would change his life forever.
- He was stuck and didn’t know what to do, so he went to his car and listened to some music, which consisted mainly of traditional salsa and merengue music.
- He felt inspired and improvised a class using this non-traditional aerobics music. The class loved it.
- They spontaneous decision led to success for him there in his hometown of Colombia.
- In 2001, he moved to the United States. He decided to team up with a childhood friend Alberto Perlman and co-found a company based on this new workout style.
- They produced a demo reel of Zumba, which was eventually discovered and licensed by a company called Fitness Quest.
- They took the concept, and along with Beto, they created a direct marketing campaign and a line of home videos.
- Zumba is very eclectic. It incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts into its choreography.
- It is the world’s leading branded fitness program.
- It is estimated that 14,000,000 people are involved with Zumba worldwide.
- It is in 185 countries and is at 140,000 locations.
